Angkor Thom: Terrasse aux Elephants

The Elephant Terrace is 300 m long and 3 to 5 m high depending on the sections. It was probably a ceremonial terrace decorated with wooden structures that have since disappeared. It is bordered by a balustrade in the shape of nagā.

From the top of this terrace King Jayavarman VII watched his victorious army march past after returning from the war against the Chams. It is these elephants in very cut-out high reliefs decorating the secondary stairs (South and central) that gave it its current name. Many elephants harnessed and mounted in bas-reliefs decorate a long length of them forming hunting scenes.
